Recap of DjangoCon Europe 2016
The conference took place at the Budapest Music Center, that’s why the official conference emoji was a saxophone 🎷. The main theme was intersectionality and both keynotes (the third one was sadly cancelled) were given by two inspiring women who are part of other programming communities.
350 Djangonauts from all over the world travelled to Budapest to participate in 3 days of talks and 2 days of tutorials. There were 24 talks of which over 50% were presented by women speakers, and 8 tutorials. The venue offered a sun deck, a music library, many quiet sitting spaces with bean bags and games, a quiet room, a prayer room, and live streaming of the talks to different rooms, which helped everyone feel extra welcome and comfortable. There was also amazing food, cool customized DjangoCon Europe socks as swag, cool cassette badges, a gif machine, and the famous gong sponsored by dashcare. Animals were welcome at the venue, which enabled two conference attendees to bring their dogs along.
The organizers also made sure that the conference was accessible to everyone. This didn’t only mean that the conference, sprint, and conference party venues were accessible but that also included live captioning throughout the 3 conference days. Pinax is proud to have sponsored the live captioning at DjangoCon Europe and helped make the conference more accessible to everyone that way. One of the two stenographers, who both flew in from the UK, gave a lightning talk about how stenography works and it was fascinating to find out more about it.
DjangoCon Europe was a huge success and we want to thank the organizers for putting together such an amazing community event and are happy to have been a part of it!
